Dear BG,
I feel like I’m annoying asking my boss if i need to help with anything - but i have nothing to do!

RB: We have been getting this question a lot - especially because it is the beginning of summer and internships sometimes are off to a slow start. To really shine at an internship or job, you need to be “solution-oriented.” That means when there’s an issue (aka you have nothing to do, you offer ideas on how to solve it). This is especially true at a new job, where co-workers are not expecting you to know everything about the company but they want to see your initiative. So instead of saying "what should I work on today?" or "what do you want me to help with?" Instead say: "I was planning on working on XYZ and will get started on this project unless there is somewhere else you need support?"

Dear bg,
Everyone is dressing reaLly causal in my internship office. can i dress like that too?

RB: Short answer...NO! It is your job as a young lady, a young professional and a new intern to hold yourself to the highest professional standard and that involves your wardrobe. Our rule of thumb - always dress two notches above the rest of the office dress code. Meaning if you are at a tech-startup and everyone wears flip flops and shorts it is okay for you to wear dark jeans, a button up blouse and ballet flats. You do not want to be out of touch wearing a pant-suit in a very casual setting but you always want to make sure you are holding yourself to a high standard.

dear bg,
I feel like the interns i work with are really competitive and constantly trying to (show off) to our boss. It seems like they're PURPOSEFULLY trying to make me look bad. What do i do?

RB: What a great question - I love this! We coach about stepping into your own power all the time at The Brand Girls. It is your duty to yourself to STAY IN YOUR OWN LANE. Meaning - check yourself before you wreck yourself - do not participate in any sort of brown-nosing, "teacher pet" type of activity. These sort of petty actions will not only be obvious to your boss but will give you an "ick" competitive and out of alignment feeling in your own gut. You are a brilliant force of nature - stand up, show up and work hard - the truth will reveal its self over time to your boss.
